After purchasing a retail business in Florida which turned out to be a pandora’s box, we reached out to E-2 Visa who had given a few free consulting sessions. We decided to hire an attorney recommended by a family friend. Our attorney insisted we find a business over $85K. We rushed to buy the business based on our attorney’s recommendations. After the purchase, we realized that the financial documents were horrible and inaccurate. The equipment in the business was “leased”, we didn’t buy the equipment, but paid for it. And to make things worse, the property lease was in eviction with a set move out date, which the seller never disclosed. Our lack of due diligence created a very stressful situation and most of our life savings were almost completely lost.
